USS ENTERPRISE, Newport News, Va. (NNS) -- USS Enterprise (CVN 65) was among the commands named to receive the 2008 Golden Anchor award for retention excellence in a Navy message released Dec. 23. The award is the result of collaborative efforts between Big E's Command Career Counselor's Office and all departmental career counselors.
During fiscal year 2008, 200 Enterprise Sailors reenlisted and more than $4 million in bonuses were awarded.
"It's very significant, getting the retention excellence award in the shipyards," said Master Chief Navy Counselor (AW/SW) K.C. Nolan, Big E's command career counselor. "During a shipyard period, it can be very hard to retain Sailors and to keep Sailors motivated. Sailors on board Enterprise are staying motivated and want to stay Navy."
Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SW) Lakia Davidson, supply department's career counselor, explained Big E's accomplishment not reflects well on the command but has a major effect on the Navy.
"This is important for manning purposes and for the Navy," said Davidson. "Not to mention, it's always good to see Sailors reenlist."
Command Master Chief (AW/SW) Dominic Musso was proud of everyone involved with attaining the award.
"I think the Golden Anchor award represents the hard work that goes into delivering the information to our Sailors to allow them to make the most informed choices about staying Navy," said Musso. "We're very happy to have the award and we look forward to having it next year."
