VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- The Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) established the Navy Expeditionary Intelligence Command (NEIC) during a ceremony at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek on Oct. 4.

NEIC is one of many new commands established through NECC to support the global war on terrorism, but unlike most of the other commands this is a first for the naval intelligence community.

"This is a historic first," said Rear Adm. Ann DeBaets Gilbride, associate director of Naval Intelligence. "Today we are standing up the Navy's first tactical intelligence command."

Rear Adm. Donald Bullard, NECC commander addressed the unit during the ceremony.

"I have all the faith in the world that you are trained and ready to go," said Bullard. "Though you're only seeing about 28 of yourselves you will be growing rapidly in the future."

Cmdr. Michael Murray, NEIC commanding officer, spoke briefly to the Sailors of his new command.

"You must willingly accept that much will be demanded of you. As you make this commitment do so with the knowledge that I will lead you from the front and I will learn from you," said Murray.

"It feels great to be a part of a new command," said Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class Josh Chand. "We're looking forward to doing our jobs and mission."

NEIC's mission is to provide tactical force protection, indications and warning intelligence enabling joint force maritime component and Navy component commanders to conduct missions across the full spectrum of expeditionary and major combat operations.
