BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- The All-Navy Wrestling Team is schedule to hold tryouts at Naval Base Kitsap, in Bremerton’s Concourse West Complex wrestling room Nov. 16.
All-Navy wrestling coach Rob Herman will be at the complex to select team members.
“Anyone with a desire should try out,” said Hermann, a retired master-at-arms and former Florida State University wrestling champion. “You shouldn’t feel intimidated by lack of knowledge about the sport. Many players in the past have been successful without having prior experience.”
"Trying out for the All-Navy wrestling team was one of the highlights of my naval career to date," said Lt. j.g. Tim Freeman. "I was suprised at the level of competition also attempting to make the team. It was a difficult experience."
Although most members of the team have experience wrestling in high school or college, beginners are encouraged to tryout. Herman said he is also looking for female wrestlers and encourages them to participate.
“We get the largest selection of wrestlers from the Pacific Northwest,” said Fred Herricht, the host of the wrestling tryouts in Bremerton. “In the last two years, 23 of 59 wrestlers selected for the team were from this region.”
Team members represent the Navy and provide recruiting exposure with thousands of young competitors, sharing information about opportunities that exist in the Navy
as they travel the world competing in open tournaments.
"I'm glad my command gave me the opportunity to tryout," said Aviation Ordnancemen 2nd Class Chris Gerrior. "Even though I wasn't selected at the regional level, I had a great time."
“It is a proud moment to represent your service and country,” said Herricht. “It gives you a thrill to hear your service hymn play when you stand on the winner's stand. These tryouts give Sailors that chance."
The All-Navy teams participate in the DoD Sports Program and compete in the Armed Forces Sports Championships against teams from the Marine Corps, Army and Air Force. Following inter-service competition, the best Navy athletes may be selected to compete as members of the All-Armed Forces Team and go on to the Military World Games, and national and international competitions.
