Hornet Strike Fighters Involved in Mishap Over Fort Hunter-Liggett

NAS LEMOORE, Calif. (NNS) -- Two single-seat F/A-18 Hornets based at Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore, Calif., were involved in a mishap while on a routine air-to-air intercept training mission June 26.

One of the pilots (Navy) ejected from the Hornet and was recovered in good condition. The other pilot, a Marine, is deceased.

The mishap occurred about 11:15 a.m. in a remote training area while the aircraft were using the Fort Hunter-Liggett military operating area. The aircraft were from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125, based at NAS Lemoore.

The name of the deceased will be released in accordance with Department of Defense notification policy.
