Naval Station Mayport Prepares for Hurricane, Sorties Ships

MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- As a precautionary measure, U.S. Navy ships homeported at Naval Station Mayport got underway at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 in anticipation of Hurricane Charley. Ships will return as the weather permits.
The following ships will head to sea: USS Carney (DDG 64), USS Hue City (CG 66), USS Klakring (FFG 42), USS McInerney (FFG 8), USS O’Bannon (DD 987), USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58), USS Simpson (FFG 56), USS Taylor (FFG 50), USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), and USS Underwood (FFG 36).
Additionally, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light (HSL) Squadron 44 Det. 1 and HSL-48 Det. 6 will get underway with USS Underwood (FFG 36) and USS O’Bannon (DD 987). The remaining helicopters will be secured in the hangar spaces at Mayport.
USS Gettysburg (CG 64), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and the coastal minehunters, USS Robin (MHC 54), USS Kingfisher (MHC 56) and USS Blackhawk (MHC 58), will remain in port due to their current maintenance status.
