ABOARD USS VINCENNES (NNS) -- Cmdr. Mark Englebert relieved Cmdr. Steve Lott as commanding officer of USS Vincennes (CG 49) in a change of command ceremony held aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser at sea Feb. 4.
Taking the helm of Vincennes, Englebert comes from his previous assignment as deputy chief of staff for plans and policy at Naval Reserve Forces Command, making him the first Full Time Support (FTS) officer to take command of an Aegis platform.
The FTS community, formerly known as Training and Administration of Reserves (TAR), provides full-time support to the Navy and full-time integration of Selected Reservists in naval operations. FTS officers and their surface line officer counterparts are equally eligible to screen for command.
“Mark is superbly qualified,” said Capt. Samuel Perez, Commander, Destroyer Squadron 15. “If you take a look at his pedigree, you can stack him up against any other line officer eligible for command, and he comes out as an absolute gem.”
A 1983 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Englebert received his commission through Officer Candidate School in 1985. During his second division officer tour, he converted from a line officer to the FTS community.
Englebert’s 18 years of service in the Naval Reserve have spanned at-sea tours aboard frigates, destroyers, fast combat support ships and coastal mine hunters. He has also commanded Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center Peoria, Ill.; served on the staff of Naval Strategic Studies; and served as chief staff officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 6.
“I’m very impressed with the crew, the chiefs and officers of Vincennes. It’s a great warship,” said Englebert.
